I’m proud to be a Texas resident! Today, thousands of people gathered at the state Capitol for the Woman’s March in Austin, Texas. This was one of over 670 sister marches across the world. Guest speakers included former Senator Wendy Davis, Representative Senfronia Thompson, and speaker Lizzie Velasquez.
This peaceful and non-violent march took place just one day after the Inauguration. It’s unbelievable that even though we are living in one of the greatest countries in the world, women still must fight to have their rights be respected and their voices heard. Sad to say, but Washington’s lawmakers have not always have respected or made the concerns of women their priority.
My daughter and her fiancé attended the Austin March. They really enjoyed the positive experience and the solidarity they felt marching alongside such a diverse group of people. Here are some photos of them from the event.
Like lead organizer, Melissa Fiero, said: “It’s a message to the incoming administration, to the Trump administration, but also to Texas legislators and elected officials, that we are a newly activated and motivated group of women who believe strongly that women’s rights are human’s rights. We recognize the fact that there a lot of people that have gone before us to do this fight for years and years, and we are going to support that and make sure that these rights are not trampled on.”
To all my sisters who marched out there today, I’m proud of you. I will leave you with a quote from Alec Baldwin at the United We Stand Really in NYC: “Trump doesn’t realize we will never lay down”.
